It was a beautiful, sunny, clear but very cold morning at the Beaver Lake
Bird Sanctuary.  Despite the cold, 12 people showed up including a half
dozen Warren Wilson College students, all talking Emily Travis’s
ornithology class.  Unfortunately, the Mandarin Duck, sighted earlier this
week, did not make an appearance.  But the birds were out and the final
total was a respectable 25 species.  The highlight for me was a Hermit
Thrush, surprisingly about 30 feet high in a tree.
