you can cover the rust quick with Rustoleum primer for rusty metal, or Eastwood has stuff that seals it permanently and covers it and that comes in colors I think.

A paint job would definitely help. But I'd at least have to sand off the bondo and try to cover up some of the rust. I've been too lazy to do that the whole time I've had the car :)
