Article #1 PowerPoint No, Cyberspace Yes

Summary:
In this article, the author expresses a strong view on the effects of both
PowerPoint and E-mail use in the classroom. Overall, it state that E-mail
can be very positive for many reasons. It allows students to discuss course
content at their own pace while providing valuable feedback for instructors.
It is considered to be the "student-centered" choice. The author also states
that Powerpoint has a negative effect when used in a classroom. It states
that PowerPoint encourages lecture based teaching which is completely
"teacher-based". When using PowerPoint, teachers have no way of receiving
feedback as far as students understanding and therefore, students are often
lost in the process, and learning is hindered.

Opinion: I believe this article does have some good point but is extremely
one sided. It is as if the author looks at what a "good" teacher can do with
E-mail in the classroom and what a " bad" teacher would do with
PowerPoint. Obviously, in order to incorporate any of these technologies in
the classroom, you need a dedicated teacher who has a sophisticated
understanding of computes. If such a teacher were to use PowerPoint in his
or her classroom, it would probably be used well. Yes, the use of
Powerpoint could be negative if it were always used as a lecture tool, but
all of the other uses of PowerPoint are never mentioned in the article.

Article #2 PowerPoint is Not Evil

Summary: This article is written in response to the previous article. The
author was bothered by some of what the article suggests about using
PowerPoint. Rocklin points out that while he also does not believe in using
PowerPoint all the time as a lecture tool, it does have other uses and one
is not a "bad " teacher for using it. Rocklin then goes on to describe some
of the ways a teacher could use PowerPoint effectively while not solely
lecturing or using PowerPoint to make a better presentation.

Opinion: This article has much more to offer than the first. I am glad that
someone decided to reply to that article. I think that the overall theme of
the article is that there are many ways in which one can use PowerPoint in a
classroom that are both interesting, and student centered. Making a blanket
statement about the negative effects of PowerPoint is ridiculous, there are
obviosly many other uses for PowerPoint that the previous author never
looked at.

Article #3 Ban It Now Friend Don't Let Friends Do PowerPoint

Summary: This article discussed PowerPoint in more of a corporate sense.
This author is also saying that PowerPoint should not be used but for
different reasons that the previous articles. This article looks at the
company of Microsoft and the implementation of microsoft as a monopoly. The
author also describes situations in the business world where people use
PowerPoint negatively.

Opinion: This article did not have much interest to me. It seemed to discuss
PowerPoint in a way that I could not relate to as well as the other
articles. Looking at the situations described by the author, it does sound
like PowerPoint needs to be stopped, and we have all seen PowerPoint shows
that were boring. However, being an open minded person, I realize that there
is much more to PowerPoint than this article suggests.
