Betsy,

I'm with you! As much as I like George's idea of education, and as much as I try to do that wherever possible, there's a fine line as to how much you can force people to change, and you'd better not cross it. That's why I still think we have to make our importers as smart as they can be, and sometimes that means compensating for human foibles. Isn't that what Windows tries to do, albeit with mixed results? Computers may not be great at making intelligent decisions, but they are very good at performing tasks rapidly and tirelessly. Unlike us humans, they never get tired or frustrated. I don't think there will ever be a perfect answer to this dilemma, but it doesn't mean we stop trying to find a better one.

Aloha listers,
I totally agree with Jean, but I also know that the real facts are that most of the files that we receive are input by folks who can sometimes barely type let alone knowing anything about formatting. It is not appropriate to tell them how to compose the file as they will really feel stressed. I only correct the parts of the input that I can without losing customers and making them feel inadequate. At our company, we believe that our job as producers is to fix the mess and provide the customer with the document when and where it is needed, and make it look like something they can be proud to distribute.

My 2 cents worth...

Jean,

You're absolutely right about the correct way to achieve blank lines, but here's the problem: As a braille producer, I get Word documents all the time from people who *don't* know any of the things you're talking about, and probably never will. I just want an option that I can turn on or off so I can deal with the practical problem of cleaning up the documents I get. At the moment, that's a painfully tedious process that can take hours because it literally requires going through the document line by line. Now, if you can suggest a rapid and efficient way to deal with this problem, I'm all ears.

Steve
