Hi, Everyone,
As far as I know, whereabouts is a word while whereabout is not. Also,
abouts is not a word either to my knowledge. So the shortform "about" would
be used in whereabouts but not in abouts. The letters abs on their own would
definitely stand for abs (body part) not abouts.
Just my thoughts.

George sounds like Duxbury is correct but the proofreader misread the rule.
What I find curious is the word 'whereabout' as a short form word. I have
never ever used whereabout as a word. Isn't it always whereabouts??

Hi,
I am quite sure that Duxbury will correct any errors.
However, I really would like to know the logic behind the rule. Why should
"abs" could cause problems?

Hi Debra,
You can indeed use the "about" shortform in "whereabouts". "Whereabout" is
in the Shortforms List and the rule is that "s" can be added to any word on
the list. The only three words that you can't add "s" to are "about",
"almost" and "him". ONLY those three words. I got this from the top of ICEB
itself and made a note of it.

We just did a Hardy Boys book in UEB and the word "whereabouts" was
contracted by DBT using the shortform for "about" but our proofreader marked
it wrong, citing page 229 of The Rules of UEB, Appendix 1: Shortforms list.
According to that list, it's okay to use the shortform for 'about' in the
word "whereabout" but not in "whereabouts". Would you all agree? And if so,
could DBT make that change in the next update? Thank you!
Best wishes,
