Some years ago when I got a new pairs wagon, I rigged what I imagined was a
temporary pole attachment system. I wanted the capability of quick
attachment and detachment, and I wanted adjustment ability. I happened to
have a couple of 3500 pound shackles. I had bought them and then realized
they were inadequate for trace ends - inadequate for either singles or
pairs - and I still strongly believe that. But I thought I'd try them up
front. So I put them on the end of a few links of chain, and at the other
end I put on each an aluminum carabiner with a gate that had a screw lock (I
got these from EMS. They are rock climbing hardware and cost about $15
each.). The carabiner allowed quick and easy shortening up on the chain
links. I had expected to use the carabiner at the pole end of the chain,
but found I liked it best on the breast collar end. It felt more secure to
have the screw lock, and it was still easy to release. I found the snap
shackle less convenient to release, and just left them on the pole end.
Reasoning suggested that aluminum would not be strong enough to hold up in
this use. After using the same carabiners for eight years, many many miles
and many competitions, I thought it was time to replace them before
learning how long they last before they break. I didn't throw them away,
and they now ride in my spares collection. The carabiners didn't show
significant visible wear. I replaced them with similar carabiners.
The other result of this long experiment is that I am confident that the
lighter weight shackles are adequate in strength for use at the pole. No
need so far to replace these.
Overall the system has been entirely successful. On rare occasions the
carabiners have come unscrewed, maybe because of not being tightened enough,
but the carabiners have never let go of the breast collar. The shackles at
the pole have never opened. As hoped, the ability to shorten up, putting
the carabiners closer up on the chain, has been very useful.
