Thanks for all the help.  I do always make sure the pin is well seated.  On one 
carriage we do have "strings" to pull on the releases.  But no strings on the 
new carriage and it still released.  I will make sure I put the pin to the 
inside as Hardy suggested.  Just envisioning how I fasten them, I probably do 
the exact opposite, pins to the outside like I do the releases on the breeching.
