Hi Rob,
As an amateur social historian (married to a dedicated 'names, dates,
places' genealogist) I am loving your stories.
Said genealogist has ancestors who spent time in South Melbourne which
was, yes, Sandridge, but before then (1850's) it was Emerald Hill and
was a muddy, disease ridden tent city! Which was confusing because there
is still an Emerald Hill to the North East of Melbourne.
Or perhaps Emerald Hill and Sandridge were adjoining areas which were
joined as South Melbourne. It is confusing for a dedicated sand groper :)
Thanks for sharing.
regards, John
