Chris, thanks for the suggestion.
I should have mentioned that the mystery --> is showing up in the sidebar.
But:
1. My skin is based on the "starter" theme and "starter" exhibits the same -->.
2. I changed nothing but some css to change "starter."
3. There's LOTS of <!-- and --> in the php scripts (esp. main.php) in "starter".
4. Using any of the other themes, including "default", eliminates the whole
problem by not having a sidebar at all.

Set up a sidebar in the default theme and see if it recurs. I believe you can
do that simply by creating a page titled "sidebar".
