More conventional, yes; a number of times I have clicked the page name
expectinmg to go to the root of the wiki.  However after a bit of
practice (couple of weeks of wiki) I no longer do that.  Although I
rarely use the backlinks function (I'm more likely to use the index
bvutton, or the search field) I like the fact that it is there (and I
have used it before).  So I agree with you, but am not sure of your
conclusion.

You mean using a sidebar?  (I followed the link but don't quite get what
you want to say).

I think this is a very good idea (displaying "newpage doesn't exist yet"
instead of "this topic...").
