As a follow-up (though the issue is still unresolved)...
one learns every day. i now know now, that when having the possibility to use preexisting perl-code or writing s.th. from scratch, i should choose the 2nd possibility in open source software.
this said, i will eventually find the time to port all of this to php. only right now, i have other priorities... 

i am sorry not to be able to help with more than a promise...
