Hi:
The default template has a prominent backlink button at the top-left of the page, with the wiki page name as its text.
I would like to remove that button in my own template. I would prefer to have the wiki title on that place, and a short description (tagline) on the top-right. This is a more conventional layout.
Of course, this means that I lose the backlink functionality. The purpose of this post is to investigate the implications and seek opinions.
I think the backlink button serves two purposes.
First, it works as a special kind of navigational aid: clicking on it reveals backlinks. I must admit that I never found this very useful, as the navigation direction is inverse. Moreover, I believe I have an appropriate solution for conventional (forward) navigation. See:

Conclusion: there's no need to keep the backlink button for this purpose.
Secondly, the backlink button text serves as a page name in some useful cases. For example, when following a link to an unexisting page, it holds the page name that can potentially be created.
To address this issue, we could make the wiki messages more descriptive. For example, instead of the current message: "This topic doesn't exist yet" we would get: "newpage doesn't exist yet" when following a link to an unexisting "newpage".
Unfortunately, this cannot be done without a new feature :-) (I think). The most straightfoward way is probably to introduce a special case of the wiki link syntax, that would resolve to the current $ID. An obvious candidate is:
[[.]]
although the analogy with unix directory syntax is not perfect.
Opinions welcome.
Regards, Jan
