The main news is obviously this rather foolish storming of aid ships by the Israeli military however I see that someone has beaten me too creating a debate on it so I encourage you to add to http://debatewise.org/debates/2009-should-israel-face-sanctions-over-the-storming-of-a-gaza-aid-convoy and I have asked you one about the blockade itself. Alex Debates: Cheese rolling races should be allowed. Cheese rolling has been a 200 year old tradition at Brockworth Gloucestershire; however it has now been banned on health and safety grounds. However this did not stop the event from unofficially happening. As the ban was not because of fears for the contestants but due to large crowds should it have been allowed to go ahead officially while reducing the numbers of spectators allowed? http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/mar/12/gloucestershire-cheese-rolling-cancelled http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100531/tod-cheese-rolling-goes-on-despite-cance-870a197.html There should be a public sector pay freeze. The private sector has taken a large hit in the recession but the public sector has taken the strain, building up large deficits for the country in the process. Now that the government is scaling back public spending should the public sector take a pay freeze to help the country pay off the deficit? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/politics/10202016.stm http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/24198/20100519/cbi-calls-for-immediate-public-sector-pay-freeze.htm When a Leaders approval rate is below 20% it is time to go. Many, indeed almost all democratic leaders plumb the depths of unpopularity at some point in their careers. However this usually only goes down so far, and a core group supports them. Both Tony Blair and George W. Bush only reached a low of about 30% approval rating however in Japan Prime Minister Hatoyama has a approval rating of a woeful 17% but he is clinging on to power. Should a political leader go once their approval rating falls below a certain level, say 20%? http://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201005310327.html http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-121877451.html p.s. may be rather difficult to separate the subject with the specifics of why someone’s approval rating is low, if it is due to a scandal should they go whereas if it is simply due to a lack of interest from the public they should stay? The sixties sexual liberation damaged society. Dame Joan Bakewell, who opposed a crusade against sex in broadcasting in the 60s, has said the freedom granted to women by the pill has been corrupted and ended in the sexualisation of young girls. Essentially she is now agreeing with her opponent Mary Whitehouse on part of the issue. The pill gave women the choice but this has increasingly opened the way for money to have a much bigger place in sex and sexualisation. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10202116.stm http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100511/NEWS/5110335 http://www.thestar.com/news/insight/article/806528--why-everything-you-know-aboutthe-sexual-revolution-is-wrong Should Theo Walcott have been left out of England’s world cup squad? Theo Walcott has in a surprise move left Theo Walcott out of the England squad he is taking to South Africa. Having been taken to the last World Cup by Eriksson, although he did not play, he could have been forgiven for thinking he would make it this time as he has more experience under his belt. Should he have been left out? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2010/article-1282196/Arsenal-legend-Paul-Merson-slams-Theo-Walcotts-lack-improvement--World-Cup.html?ito=feeds-newsxml http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8713742.stm Debates on the site: Israel should lift its blockade of Gaza? Israel’s blockade of Gaza is the cause behind the aid convoy that was boarded by Israeli soldiers. The aid ships were attempting to break the blockade to bring supplies to Gaza that has withstood more than 1000 days of ‘siege’. However it is disputed both how effective the blockade is and how legal it is. Israel claims that it allows in plenty of humanitarian aid and only blocks weapons that groups whose aim is to destroy Israel such as Hamas are smuggling in while the US says that Gaza gets only a third of the humanitarian aid it needs. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/rest-of-world/Israel-should-lift-Gaza-blockade-UN-chief/articleshow/5999897.cms http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-06-01/israel-flotilla-disaster-gaza-embargo-us-supporters-to-blame/?cid=hp:exc http://mideast.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/03/16/gazas_tragically_peculiar_economy Is Homer Simpson the Greatest TV or Film character of all time? D’oh! Homer Simpson has been voted the greatest TV character of the last 20 years. He would seem to be lacking in most of the qualities of greatness except for in comedy which is perhaps what makes him so endearing to us. But could he be the greatest TV or film character of all time? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10202115.stm http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article2042236.ece http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/2985728.stm David Laws should step down as an MP. The government immediately referred the matter of David Laws expenses to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards in the hope it could hold on to the Liberal Democrat as Chief Secretary to the Treasury where he has in the short time he was there been competent and helped steady the markets. However it was obvious Laws would have to resign and resign he did. This however does not mean that it is right that he should have felt he had to resign or that he should be considering his future as an MP. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/7783613/Only-this-painful-sacrifice-could-save-the-new-politics.html http://www.libdemvoice.org/david-laws-should-i-stay-as-an-mp-19785.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/blog/2010/may/30/michael-white-david-laws Should firms be able to profit from running schools? Free schools are a core part of the Conservative election manifesto. Every parent should be allowed to set up their own schools if they wish. However should private companies be able to profit from setting up these new schools? Michael Gove the Schools minister says he has ‘no ideological objection’ to firms seeking to profit from setting up these new schools. Maybe he does not but is it really the solution or just making more private schools? http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/may/31/michael-gove-academy-schools-profit http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2010/jun/01/michael-gove-academies-profits-law http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23830305-companies-in-race-to-run-first-state-school-for-profit.do _________________________________________________________________ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/195013117/direct/01/ We want to hear all your funny, exciting and crazy Hotmail stories.
