Hi all, Alex, sorry I havn't made any contributions for the past few weeks, I've been moving to Brussels and have had very little free time. Can I please take Does it matter if David Cameron and the Tories are adopting a Pro-Unionist stance in Northern Ireland? I'll post it up by Thursday night. I have to admit this is partially my fault as I picked it with the intention of doing some of it myself but as I was ill over the weekend I did not get around to it. Hopefully I will do it at some point this week. Our prisons are full but there is little the government can do about it. They constantly create more crimes with jail terms and constantly pile the pressure on judges to give longer and longer periods in prison with minimum sentences. Alongside this there is an unwillingness to release prisoners early, it does not go down well with the public. Despite this booming prison population the government cannot easily and quickly build new prisons. Not surprisingly local communities object to the idea of having new prisons built in their area. The Conservatives solution to this problem is to bring back Prison ships that were phased out in 2005. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8478477.stm http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7001668.ece Is Britain now out of the recession for good. Britain is finally out of recession. However growth is not yet secure and there is the possibility that it may slip, exports rely upon the weak sterling that could change if the overall economy improves. The banks may be in a better financial position but carry on the same way they always did. Overall the prospects still look bleak for ordinary workers for some time yet so it is unlikely to feel like their is much of a recovery for some time yet. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/jan/25/recession-britain-economy-labour http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/comment/david-prosser-the-real-life-recession-will-continue-1878932.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/6866817/Charles-Goodhart-warns-of-return-to-recession-as-bank-lending-falls.html Does it matter if David Cameron and the Tories are adopting a Pro-Unionist stance in Northern Ireland? David Cameron has been hosting meetings between the Ulster Unionists and Democratic Unionists in a effort to help them sort out their differences. He may at the same time be ruining his chances of being seen as an independent broker in Northern Ireland should he get into Downing Street because he may well be seen as being pro-Unionist. However Cameron may well want the votes of Northern Irish parties in Westminster should he win by a narrow margin. And after all he claims that he is trying to help not hinder the peace process. http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/jan/25/tories-northern-island-gordon-brown http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/blog/2010/jan/21/henry-mcdonald-tories-unionists-cameron http://www.irishcentral.com/story/news/periscope/tory-leader-davd-cameron-may-destroy-irish-peace-process-82411112.html Would it be wrong to allow Colonel Gaddaffi’s son to take over Portsmouth FC? Britain has been slowly establishing closer relations with Libya since it gave up its nuclear program. Colonel Gaddaffi’s son ... is like many with lots of money eyeing the prize of a football club in the English Premier League as somewhere to spend his millions. However these millions are earned due to his closeness to the Libyan state. And Libya itself may be improving but it is hardly a free country. But still we are a free country so should we allow him to take over a football club? http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jan/26/football-trasnfer-rumours-huntelaar-arsenal http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/4871613.Gadaffi__to_buy_Pompey_/ Is it acceptable that the £1.5bn pledged to fight climate change by the UK will come mainly from existing overseas aid funds? Activists demanded that all money that goes to fight climate change should be new money not simply money being shuffled around between different aid budgets or labelled as taking two roles. However a leaked email exchange implies that this is precisely what is already happening, the money is not new but is being diverted from other areas of the Department for International Development’s budget. Budgets are tight at the moment so aid (despite guarantees) is bound to be squeezed and this is more likely to occur in other areas. Will there really be any new money for fighting climate change? http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jan/25/climate-aid-uk-funding http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE60O0WL20100125 http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900SID/HHVU-7X9E2N?OpenDocument Use Revisewise @ http://revisewise.debatewise.com/
