Yup, not surprised at all. I had quite a strong debate with a guy about this
once. He wanted me to do some mixing for him and wanted to send me the files
in MP3 format.

Hay Phil,
Herman and I just found out today that MP3 files also can lose the timing
alignment in Sonar as well. Once we inserted the .WAV files instead of the
MP3, all the timing issues ceased.
