An alternative way of doing this would be to use all balanced cables for the headphone amp and monitors etc. You could use a balanced jack that has two stereo sockets on the end of it. You would need two of those. One for the left output of the FW-1884, and one for the right. You would then plug one of the headphone amp outputs into the left hand jack lead and the left output to your monitors into the other left hand socket on that cable. You would then do the same on the right hand one. Have used cables like this here for a number of years with 0 issues and checked out the implications of this, with a good friend from Absolute music over here in the UK before actually doing this. Another up side of this is totally 0 latency monitoring as you can use the FW-1884's hardware monitoring feature. The down side though is that your monitors and headphone amp are on the same output so when recording, you would have to turn your monitors off or, down when tracking. Sean wrote: many of you may not know, but I have created a template that allows for more then one master output for multiple room monitors, as well as a template that allows for using the auxiliary outputs for things like headphone monitors and other line level devices. a Headphone amplifier is not supposed to receive amplified signal. Only line level, otherwise you can easily fry the operational amplifier of the headphone amp. Phil replied: Creating a template like Sean's one is a good idea. The upside to this is that you don't have to use any strange cable configurations and you can give vocalists affects such as reverb when tracking. The down side to this could be if you have a slower system as you won't be able to use the 0 latency hardware monitoring feature on the FW-1884. This could mean that when tracking, you may hear a slight delay when using affects through Sonar and this could potentially be an issue. With regard to frying the op amps on headphone amps, not had that happen here and from reading the FW-1884 manual, all outputs are balanced line so, I can't see this being an issue. Having said that, I am using a Behrenger headphone amp so, wouldn't be that concerned if I fried anything, LOL!
