[ddots-l] Re: Talking control surfaces (was: Mackie Display Reader)

Oops,

I forgot to confirm that I'll be putting together a Mackie C4 configuration
as well, though it certainly won't be ready in time for the earlier beta
versions. Beta 1 probably won't have any predefined configurations at all,
as I'm more interested in testing the MIDI handling and some UI design
before committing time to generating the configuration files.

Best wishes.

Just one correction - the tail went weeks ago and I daren't think what I'm
currently eroding.

Seriously, though, SurfaceReader allows for the definition of any control
surface that uses direct MIDI traffic to transmit its control changes
(button presses, knob turns, fader moves, etc.). It can also be taught any
MIDI messages that populate any software-controllable display that might be
fitted to your device, which is where it gets really useful. I'm doing my
initial testing with a Behringer BCF2000, a Mackie Control Universal and a
Frontier Designs Tranzport - the first two devices I'll use to generate
definitions for their supported Mackie Control, Logic Control and HUI
protocols. These configurations should also get units like the Tascam
FW1884 going, as the FW1884 can emulate these protocols, though there's no
reason why you couldn't create a protocol definition for this device when
it's in its native protocol mode - the same would apply for the Tascam
US2400. This is exactly what I've done for the Tranzport, as this device
uses its own native protocol when you use it with Sonar or Reaper. If your
device doesn't have a MIDI-populated display, you can still get some
benefit, as SurfaceReader will allow you to define key/knob/fader names on a
per-application basis and have them announced together with the MIDI message
value that they're transmitting - I've done this with an M-Audio Oxygen 2 as
a quick test, but you'd have to load application-specific SurfaceReader
application configurations every time you changed the active preset on
hardware like this - I have an idea how I might automate this process, but
it won't be in this release.

Devices like the Novation range of controllers that use some intermediate
software to handle their message traffic (AutoMap is Novation's product) can
not currently be handled, though I've put the basic structures into the code
in preparation for when I have the time to attack the rest of the problem.
Novation have very kindly provided me with their software development kit
and a quick look seems to indicate that it's not a huge job to add AutoMap
support, but it's more than I've got time for at the moment.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes.

Tim's working his tail off this weekend, so I'll step in for him as best I
know, since I'm sure you are anxious to get an answer.

At this moment, it should control the Mackie Control Universal and the C4,
plus the Behringer BCF 2000 and Frontier Designs Tranzport.

I believe others can and perhaps will be added later.

George.

I don't know. Ask Tim!!
