Hi, Rubens,

I found the user manual for the QS 81 online. Part 5 describes options for
using MIDI functions. Here is an excerpt.

"you have to connect the sequencer's MIDI Out to the QS's [MIDI
IN], and the QS's [MIDI OUT] to the sequencer's MIDI In."

I described this requirement in my last message to you. Their manual
describes "the sequencer" but you can substitute that phrase for the
Quad-Capture. But this next sentence is what I hope will configure your QS
8 to send and to receive MIDI data:

"in Global Edit mode, (I/O) must be set to "MIDI". This allows the QS to
send data to the sequencer
for recording, and play back data from the sequencer."

Sounds like you will need help from a sighted assistant to find global edit mode on your QS 8 and then change the I/O setting to "MIDI". BTW, I/O must
be an abbreviation for input/output.

I will send the full text of the manual I found to you off-list.

HTH,
Bill

Hello bill,

Thanks for your long detailed instruction. Unfortunately, it did not work.
Now, you said:
Do you hear the notes which you have recorded?

If so, wonderful. If not, it may be that you must change a setting on your
Alesis keyboard to tell it to send and to receive data through the MIDI
ports. I do not have an Alesis keyboard so I cannot tell you how to change
that setting. Refer to the owner's manual for that information.

My keyboard is now nearly 17 years old and I do not have the manual no
longer for the QS8. If, somehow, I find the manual on the Internet, where in
the manual do I look for the thing you mentioned, that is, what should I
type in the _search? I can try to have sighted help if the manual is in
Portuguese specially.

Best,

Rubens marshall
p.s. by the way, the Quad Capture seems to be working fine and I wonder, how
do I prevent from exploding the circuit when I plug in an audio in the mic
hole? Is there a right level for the volume bubbons?

Hi, Rubens,

As you may already know, you will need 2 MIDI cables connected as follows:

Connect one of the MIDI cables to the MIDI In port of your Alesis keyboard
and the other end of that cable to the MIDI output of the Quad-Capture.
Connect your other MIDI cable to the MIDI Out port of your Alesis keyboard
and the other end of that cable to the input of the Quad-Capture.
That is, in goes to out and out goes to in.
You may need help from a sighted assistant to be sure that you know which
port is input and which one is output.

When your Alesis keyboard is not connected to a computer, I presume that
you
can play it and hear sounds. If so, you should definitely be able to
trigger those sounds from SONAR.

In SONAR, press ALT+O to go to the O[Options menu. The first entry should
be MIDI Options. Press ENTER to open that dialog.

Make sure that the input driver for the Quad-Capture is checked and that
it
is the first driver in the list that is checked.

Press the TAB key to move to the list of MIDI Out drivers.
Make sure that the output driver for the Quad-Capture is checked and that
it
is the first driver in the list that is checked.

Press TAB until you reach OK and press space bar or the ENTER key.

Make sure that you are recording on a MIDI track. Your template may be
set
to record MIDI and play it back through the Cakewalk TTS soft synthe.

To make sure you have a MIDI track, try the following:

Press CONTROL+I

Press the DOWN ARROW key until you reach the choice to insert a MIDI track
at the bottom of your project. Press ENTER.

Press F6 to refresh screen.

Move to the Channel column by pressing SHIFT+C C. That is, hold down the
SHIFT key and, with your other hand, type the letter c twice quickly.
Press ENTER.

Press DOWN ARROW to change the MIDI channel to 1.

Press SHIFT+I. Is Input set to "None"? That should be OK.

Press SHIFT+O. What is output set to?

Type W to rewind to beginning of the project.

Type the letter R to record.

Play a few measures of music on the Alesis.

Press space bar to stop recording.

Press space bar once again to play back your project.

Do you hear the notes which you have recorded?

If so, wonderful. If not, it may be that you must change a setting on
your
Alesis keyboard to tell it to send and to receive data through the MIDI
ports. I do not have an Alesis keyboard so I cannot tell you how to
change
that setting. Refer to the owner's manual for that information.

HTH,
Bill

Subject: [ddots-l] Roland quad Capture problem?

Hello friends,

With Sonar I try to point the imput to my keyboard with no success yet.I
checked my two midi cables and they are all working fine.

I created a midi track and went to input and there says: imput = quad
capture omni. Is this what it is
supposed to say?
Then, in the same midi track which is empty and has no sound, I went to
the
output; put the midi cable into elises keyboard midi imput and the other
end
of the cable in the output of the Quad.

I recorded something but when played back, could not hear any
soundsour of the alises Keyboard--sothe could it be that roland quad
capture isn't sending midi out for some reason and how would I fix it?

i got the card from dancing dots. I have the manual but I have no idea
what
to look for or how to fix it! Since the Quad Capture is real new, I
doubt if there is something wrong with it but perhaps something is
not quite setup with the keyboard alises to receive midi signals. I
can record the alises on Sonar audio but with midi I can have better
controll!

Hope to hear from you. Thanks a million.
Best,
Rubens Marshall
