Hi Stephanie.
I'm cross-posting this to the blind-guitarist group on Yahoo, in case they have some suggestions I didn't list below. Your friend may wish to join this group as well, and can do so by sending a blank email to:
blind-guitarist-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Your friend has a few options:
1. Tune to a reliable reference, such as an electronic keyboard. This involves playing the target notes on the instrument and adjusting the guitar to match. Many electronic guitar tuners also emit tones which you can use in the same way.

2. If your friend has an iPhone or iPad, there is a Talking Tuner app they can get.

3. I believe Boss make a tuner that beeps when you reach the target pitch, possibly model TU-80. I haven't personally tried it, so your friend should research that through Boss's website.

4. If this person is computer savvy and can play an acoustic guitar into a microphone connected to the computer, or connect an electric guitar to the computer's sound card, FMJ-Software make a shareware tuning program called Chromatia, available from:
http://www.fmjsoft.com/chromatia.html

It has an audible mode that can either play a reference pitch similar to other tuners, but it also has a vibrate mode where you hear a clicking noise through your computer speakers. As you get closer to in tune, closer to the target pitch, the clicking slows down. The slower the clicking noise, the closer you are to the target pitch.

Hello all,

Sorry if this is off-topic. But recently, a blind guitarist contacted me looking for a tuner that provides feedback in an audio format instead of with light. I'm not a guitarist, so I have no idea where to tell him to look, or even if such a thing exists.

If anyone knows of anything that might be useful, please contact me off-list.

Thanks so much,

Stephanie Pieck
