Hi all. I'm sure somebody can explain this, and pretty briefly at that. I've got a couple questions about meters.
1. I thought, in older versions of CT, you used to be able to arm a track, and hit f2 to read the input meters? Is that not possible anymore? It seems pretty tedious to have to record something and undo and record and undo to get your input levels right.
2. Speaking of levels, can somebody explain how to read them? I don't mean the keys, I mean what they mean. I've seen input and output levels get pretty mismatched, I assumed they'd roughly be the same, if I'm not using any effects or such to play with the levels. So if I have a track's volume and trim set to 0 DB, and my input level is say -20, I should get -20 as an output too. Or, if my level is say -12, my output shouldn't be clipping.
I'm asking about this because I've finally got my space set up that I can start some serious recording, I hope anyway, and I want to do a lot of audio, Esp. rhythmic stuff like strange percussion instruments. They tend to be a lot harder to record because of sharper attack sounds. So I'm trying to get a handle on quickly and accurately using CT's meters.
As I understand it, the meters on the tracks tell me input and output for those, then the track output gets summed to the master bus? So I'd want to keep the output low enough so it sums to -0.1 DB. Or lower I guess, if I'd want to add compression and limiting or such? But I'm a little less interested in that, which is more mixing, than in just understanding A. how to use CT's meters as quickly and accurately as possible so I don't spend an hour just setting levels, assuming that's even possible, and B. what the meters are telling me.
