Yes, usually Q isn't a factor with shelves or cut filter types. Although, some plug-ins blur the lines or offer variants on the traditional filter types.

How do you tell where those high and low frequencies are? By ear man, by ear! Perhaps you have an OK ear for music, and you start relabelling that by learning the frequency values for some of the pitches you already know.

4th octave A, the note orchestras tune up with, is 440 HZ. Double that and you get 880 HZ, 5th octave A. Double it again, 1760 HZ or 6th octave A. Go the other way and you get
220 HZ: 3rd octave A
110 HZ: 2nd octave A
55 HZ: 1st octave A
27.5HZ: the lowest A on a piano.
The math part is simple, simply multiplying or dividing by 2 to get the same pitch an octave higher or lower.

Practice leads to more familiarity.
Practice practice practice.

To bring this back to mixing or mastering, what frequency range does the body of a vocal track sit in? Now what about the breathiness or sibilance? Take a bass track. Where are the fundamentals of the notes and where are the attacks, the picking or plucking sounds at the start of the notes? Where is the body of a kick drum and where is the click of the attack? etc.

Learn to sweep the center frequency around with things boosted so you can find unwanted resonances or qualities in a vocal track, or maybe some ringing in a snare track. Turn those annoying areas into dips instead of peaks and they go away. or at least become less of a problem. Note: you will probably want a control surface to sweep around like that, since using keyboard shortcuts still move things in discrete steps.

So I guess you're talking about peek dip then? If so How do you determine
where in the spectrum the high and low frequencies are?
