Although I don't use it, you might want to look into the Akai MPC 4000.

Subject: [ddots-l] Advice on a sampler drum machine combo

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a unit which has a sampler and drum machine in a single
unit. I'm not looking for a keyboard because I'd like to put it in my suit
case and travel with it. I'm totally blind, so I'm just asking to see what
some of you have out there have. Rather than asking what is accessible, I'm
just looking to find out what units some of you use and find relatively
straight forward.
I'm looking for something to help me compose ideas if I'm away from home.
