Nebula thinks Outside the Box at Melbourne Fringe

Outside The Box was 10 sunny, lively days of accessible art in and on Nebula
at Melbourne’s City Square, as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival!

Nebula, Arts Access Victoria’s portable and fully-accessible contemporary art
space, overflowed with art, including Deaf Slam Poetry—one of Concrete
Playground's top ten picks of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. People of all
ages and abilities learned Auslan poems, joined tea ceremonies, cartooned
with Brent Harpur and exercised to '80s hits with Deanna from Art Day South.

Thank you to the many who came out to watch, participate and create with us!

MSO hosts music workshops for Deaf students

On Thursday 23 July, students from the Victorian College of the Deaf (VCD)
joined music educator and workshop facilitator Karen Kyriakou and
British-born practicing and profoundly deaf musician Danny Lane for a day of
musical exploration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The aim of the workshop was to open up the world of music to Deaf children
and give them inspiration to compose and perform their own music.

What Prime Minister Turnbull means for the arts

Over at ArtsHub, Richard Watts examines new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's
form on the arts, as arts leaders launch a campaign to persuade the new PM to
rethink the budget cuts to Australia Council and former Arts Minister George
Brandis' National Program for Excellence in the Arts (NPEA).

NDIS Certainty for Victoria

The Victorian Government has secured the future rollout of the NDIS across
Victoria after signing a bilateral NDIS Agreement with the federal government
on Wednesday 16 September 2015.

The NDIS will roll out across Victoria from 1 July 2016, meaning big change
for people with disability, their families and carers.

Audio description on the agenda

Vision Australia representatives met with MPs in September as part of the
ongoing campaign for the inclusion of audio description on Australian TV.

Of the campaign, Vision Australia’s general manager of advocacy and
engagement Maryanne Diamond said, “Audio description has been available on US
television since the late 1980s...Australians who are blind or have low
vision have been advocating for decades for audio description on television,
but it remains out of reach."

iTunes Australia expands audio description offering

Media Access Australia reports that there has been a small development in the
availability of audio described movies from Apple iTunes in Australia, with a
number of Disney/Pixar films including Brave, Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo
now available with audio description.

Early this year, Media Access Australia released Access on Demand, a report
on the accessibility of video-on-demand (VOD) services in Australia and other
countries. Click here to download Access on Demand.

Redefining the (able) body

Inspired by the strong and vibrant presence of artists with disability at
Melbourne Fringe, Yoni Prior—a lecturer in the School of Communication and
Creative Arts at Deakin University and board member of Back to Back
Theatre—recently wrote a piece for The Conversation on 'redefining the (able)
body'.

Refusing limits: Why the government must fund disability arts

On The Guardian (UK), theatre writer Lyn Gardner delves into the exciting
growth of the disability arts scene in the UK, currently under threat due to
government austerity programmes.

"The growing visibility of disabled arts... has not happened by accident but
because there has been money to support artists... It is an example of what
happens when the funding system decides to take an interest rather than
ignoring an area of artistic practice."

Edinburgh Fringe access put to the test

By most reports, this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival was to be its most
wheelchair-accessible event yet... so a volunteer from a Scottish housing and
care provider put the festival to the test.

Suhayl Afzal, a wheelchair user, says he saw signs of improvement, but warns
that progress is being made at “glacial speed” and that he faced multiple
access issues including heavy doors and cobbled streets.

Captions draw crowds

In the US, the Florida Access Coalition for the Arts (FLACA) is seeing the
exciting results of their push for increased captioning for live performances
in South Florida venues.

Says FLACA founder Lew Balaban, "The last show of the season at Kravis
[Center for the Performing Arts] — it was Flashdance — the display broke.
People streamed out to the lobby to find out what happened. Kravis had no
idea that there were that many people there for the captioning. Not a clue."

Actor champions inclusive theatre

A cast member in a Broadway revival of The King and I took to Facebook to
publicly shame audience members after witnessing a child with autism and
their mother being 'heckled' after making noise during a matinee performance
of the show.

Shared nearly 30,000 times, Kelvin Moon Loh wrote in his Facebook post, "I
believe... theater is created for all people. I stand by that... The King and
I on Broadway is FAMILY FRIENDLY and that means entire families- with
disabilities or not. Not only for special performances but for all
performances. A night at the theater is special on any night you get to go."

Bold Beauty invites new perspectives

The Bold Beauty Project is an innovative visual arts exhibition showcasing 20
women living with disability.

The exhibition will feature billboard-size photographs of the women, with
each model’s personal story placed next to her photo; the aim of the project
is to empower women with disability to redefine beauty through photography
and narrative expression.

The Taming of the Shrew

Melbourne University Shakespeare Company presents a new interpretation of the
classic story.

Five suitors compete for the hand (and love) of the two wealthy Minola
sisters. The suitors pull out all the stops to get the girl: flattery,
disguises, bribes, even a bit of violence, psychological torture and
starvation.

Far from the roll in the hay that people expect of Shakespearean comedies,
this Taming of the Shrew will draw attention to cycles of violence,
manipulation and nepotism that still exist in so many homes across Australia.
It may not be the Shrew we deserve, but it's the one we need right now.

Venue: Guild Theatre, Union House
Location: University of Melbourne, Parkville campus
When: 14-24 October. Auslan interpreted show Saturday October 24 at 7pm
Cost: Full $20/Conc $15
Bookings: Click here to book tickets via TryBooking or call Producer Matilda
Houlihan on 0424 110 768
