Hi Tony,

I was thinking about your noise problem and thought I could share my thought
with you. My experience with noise when using Darkice is that it tends to be
in the analog part of the audio circuit. When I say analog part I mean from
the microphone to the input of the PCM. I use USB Dual-pre from ART for my
PCM. The input of the ART box is XLR microphone connectors and the output is a
USB port.

You can test the quality of the audio signal path by using a simple audio
recorder like arecord to make a sample recording of the audio quality and play
it back with out having Darkice in the equation. Just make sure that the
Dual-pre (or your input device) is the default input audio device for Linux.

If this test indicates that there no noises from the audio part of the
circuit then the other source for noise is in the quality of your network
connection between the Darkice system, the Icecast system and/or the connection
between the Icecast system and the internet. My Icecast servers are on a good
link to the internet so once I get recorded material uploaded to the Icecast
server I have little problems with sound quality. My noise problems have been
the link between the Darkice system and the Icecast servers.

  Hope this helps,

Joel Goodwin
