Agreed! Zoning changes alone won’t make the city more affordable or accessible!

Nelly,
You make an excellent point. But I cannot see this change providing
affordable and accessible housing unless the plan requires it? I have not
read the plan so I don't know whether it does or not. We are a capitalist
society and it often happens that development is geared toward money making
and disregards the environment, native habitat, wildlife and the importance
of nature in our lives. A larger focus is crucial. One neighborhood may seem
inconsequential but changes to our use of land, one city and then another,
makes a huge difference.
We could lobby the city council and mayor (or whomever) to look at the bigger
picture and consider greenspace. To me this means more ways that people can
enjoy our own and other contiguous neighborhoods with sidewalks, parks,
wildlife corridors, native plant and pollinator gardens, trails, and kids
playgrounds that make use natural elements, such as logs and stepping stones,
sand and other things that support kids use of their imaginations, not just
sliding or swinging. I love sliding and swinging but we can provide options
that do not involve plastic.
I believe it is good zoning policy for the City to include land it has or
should purchase [for example, the property at the northeast and southeast
corners of Brodie and Davis, or along Davis] to maintain and create native
safe places for habitat and wildlife, including corridors for wildlife so can
safely cross streets to find food and shelter. This kind of side by side
planning gives people and critters a more affordable, healthy place to live.
There was news recently about the greenspace bridge park San Antonio built
over roadways.

Morning, all.
Not sure that I am as squarely in the “no development” boat (nothing like
helping a young adult find affordable and accessible housing in this city and
thinking about multi-family home as our parents age to soften position). That
said, one of my biggest concerns when it comes to some of these larger
rezoning discussions is what plans are (or aren’t) in place for
infrastructure improvements (water, electricity, roads, flooding, fire risk,
etc.) as we diversify housing options within neighborhoods.
For those of you submitting protests: I hope you’ll consider adding language
about needed consideration for infrastructure improvements in your letters.
And I encourage all (whether for or against) to reach out directly to CM Ryan
Alter’s office if you’d like an opportunity for more of a dialogue:

I have a general question for the group. Does anyone have insight into the
Austin City Council’s efforts to rezone all single family neighborhoods?
According to the below, it seems people need to file protests in order to
prevent this from happening to their homes by Oct 31st.
We have such a unique and special community here in COVNA. I love this
neighborhood because of the large yards and wide streets, plenty of outdoor
space for my kids. I really dislike the thought of our neighborhood turning
into what’s currently being built over on the Davis roundabout.

File a Neighborhood Conservation Protest to Protect Your Home from City
Hall's Latest Rezoning Plan
Dear Edwin,
The City of Austin plans to end single-family zoning and allow many more
units on existing residential lots.
Concerned residents should protect their homes by filing neighborhood
conservation protests

When a property owner files a neighborhood conservation protest, the city
council cannot rezone his or her property without supermajority support
(nine of 11 votes).

Under the city's new plan, a 5,000-square-foot lot could be subdivided
into two lots to hold a total of six units, and a 7,500-square-foot lot
could be turned into three lots, with a total of nine units. Bigger lots
could be subdivided even further, potentially holding dozens of units.

To accommodate the new units, the council plans on allowing more
impervious cover, taller neighborhood buildings, and decreasing the
setbacks around structures.
The first hearing on the plan is set for October 26—but residents should
file protests
