Some long term clients of mine had read my post the other day about the
fact that I hoped medical teams coming to Haiti would also be training
Haitian medical staff. They did not like to brag, so I asked their
permission to send you all their report - because I think it is a fantastic
report on what they are accomplishing in Gonaives. They have
been clients of mine for over 10 years, as I handle all their transport and
doing this work for that length of time, if not more.
Dr. Jim Smith's report: One week's work with 26 medical and support
personnel:
"We treated over a thousand patients and did 52 surgeries. Since we
brought an ENT surgeon and an Orthopedic surgeon with us (in addition to
myself, a General Surgeon), some of our patients came from as far away as
Port-au-Prince. I am proud to report to you that all three of the surgeons
are operating with Haitian surgeons together on many of these surgeries. We
ask for it whenever possible. Also, this trip we were able to invite
Haitian surgical technicians and surgical nurses, anesthesia students, and
nursing students to participate or observe in most of our surgeries, which
were all conducted at the main new Gonaives MSPP hospital, HPG (Hopital
Providence Gonaives), (hospital which the Canadian govt. had built) with
which we have had our ongoing relationship for the last 10 years.
I couldn’t help noticing a recent post of yours on the Corbett list
encouraging that we who bring health care to the people of Haiti should
also be trying to teach our medical knowledge to the providers in Haiti.
We wanted you to know that we couldn’t agree with you more.
Thus, we wanted you to know that this subject has been coming up formally
in our Health4Haiti Board meetings for the last couple of years. I wanted
to include you in the knowledge of what our one small heath organization is
including in our short and long term goals for what we hope to accomplish
in Haiti. " end report.
I'm sure you will agree with me that this is a wonderful report of some
great work accomplished for the Haitian people.
