Panelproposal for LASA2017
Dear colleagues, Please find below a Call forPapers for participation in the
panel: “Latin American migrants in the‘North’: development and transnationalism
in times of crises”. The panel will take place in the Latin American
StudiesAssociation’s Congress in Lima, Peru between April 29 and May 1st,2017.
Migration has been recognised as oneof the main strategies that households
employ for the production andreproduction of their livelihoods, especially in
the global South. Having recognisedmigrants as a current and potential social,
economic and political force, manyLatin American governments have recently
embraced the idea that migrants – andtheir remittances – can act as key
transnational development agents in theirhomeland. At the same time, we are
witnessing a double economic and socio-political crisis in the globalNorth, in
the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis and in the face of thegrowing
political cloud of openly xenophobic political parties and the
growingcriminalization of migrants. This panel aims todevelop a comparative
view of these experiences among Latinos in North Americaand Latin American
diasporas in Europe and elsewhere. This includes, but itis not limited to: i)
Analyses of themultiple forms in which migration affects the wellbeing,
capabilities andsocioeconomic development of migrant families and their
potential impact onmigrants’ localities of origin. ii) Analyses of the waysin
which the aforementioned double economic and socio-political crisis
haveimpacted upon the potential for migration to aid the development of
transnationalmigrant households in origin and destination countries. iii)
Critical analyses of the notion of developmentimplicit in the established
global migration-development agenda and how it differsfrom alternative notions
of sustainable development such as ‘buen vivir’. Priority will be givento
papers that explore these themes from an interdisciplinary perspective and, in
keeping with the conference’stheme, promote academic and non-academic dialogues
of knowledge among differentstakeholders. Please send your name, institutional
affiliation paper title and abstract, of no more than 250 words, to Gisela
Zapata (gpzapata@xxxxxxxxx) and Anastasia Bermudez (abermudez1@xxxxx) before
