*Panel proposal for LASA2017*
Dear colleagues,
Please find below a *Call for Papers* for participation in the panel: *“Latin
American migrants in the ‘North’: development and transnationalism in times
of crises”.* The panel will take place in the Latin American Studies
Association’s Congress in Lima, Peru between April 29 and May 1st, 2017.
Migration has been recognised as one of the main strategies that households
employ for the production and reproduction of their livelihoods, especially
in the global South. Having recognised migrants as a current and potential
social, economic and political force, many Latin American governments have
recently embraced the idea that migrants – and their remittances – can act
as key transnational development agents in their homeland. At the same
time, we are witnessing a double economic and socio-political crisis in the
global North, in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis and in the
face of the growing political cloud of openly xenophobic political parties
and the growing criminalization of migrants.
This panel aims to develop a comparative view of these experiences among
Latinos in North America and Latin American diasporas in Europe and
elsewhere. This includes, but *it is not limited* to:
i) Analyses of the multiple forms in which migration affects the wellbeing,
capabilities and socioeconomic development of migrant families and their
potential impact on migrants’ localities of origin.
ii) Analyses of the ways in which the aforementioned double economic and
socio-political crisis have impacted upon the potential for migration to
aid the development of transnational migrant households in origin and
destination countries.
iii) Critical analyses of the notion of development implicit in the
established global migration-development agenda and how it differs from
alternative notions of sustainable development such as ‘buen vivir’.
Priority will be given to papers that explore these themes from an
*interdisciplinary
perspective* and, in keeping with the conference’s theme, promote academic
and non-academic *dialogues of knowledge among different stakeholders*.

papers/presentations may be in English, Español or Português. All
presenters must be members of LASA to be included in the proposal.
