I decided that since my husband owns a BlackBerry I should see how the patent fight was going. The BlackBerry was invented and patented in Waterloo, Ontario by Research In Motion (RIM). An Arlington, VA based NTP, which is a patent holding company said the BlackBerry infringed on 16 claims of five NTP patents. RIM said that US patent laws have no jurisdiction in Canada. March 16, 2005, Research In Motion agreed to pay $450 million to settle patent infringement, months later the deal unraveled. As of Feb. 17, 2006, they are still going at it. On Feb 24, 2006, there will be another court hearing to determine if RIM will have to end service to its 3 million US servers. They can do a workaround, but not many customers are going to want to go through the trouble installing new software. _http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=159901086_ (http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=159901086) _www.techweb.com/headlines_week/_ (http://www.techweb.com/headlines_week/) _http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/biztech/02/17/rim.cfo.reut/_ (http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/biztech/02/17/rim.cfo.reut/) TeAnna Taphouse TeAnna0713@xxxxxxx (this is the one for Listserv) teajorwolf@xxxxxxxxx A careless word may kindle strife.
