Had one Yellow-crowned Night Heron on an old nest at the shrinking Tranbarger Drive site in north Kingsport yesterday (March 24). At this time I can only see a single old nest, which is where the bird was perched. Continued development and a dramatic increase in traffic from new apartment complexes adjacent to the small colony may be responsible for the decrease in usage. The trees used for nesting are all on a narrow strip of private property and there are no pulloffs along the road or near the colony where one can stop for observation. The road is heavily used by fast moving vehicles, so be extremely cautious if you come looking for a bird here. Rick -- Rick Phillips Kingsport, Tennessee
