From Nora Schubert - Southern Appalachian Highland Conservancy's Roan Mountain Ecologist: Friends, This is a reminder for those who might want to join us for a day of trail work on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 30, at the Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area. Only three volunteers are lined up to date, so more help is needed. If you haven't been there in a while, you will be most pleased at the progress that has been made on the Area's trail system. Thanks to the work of Lisa Huff and an Americorps Crew this summer, added to the work of SAHC volunteers and a church mission group last year and the year before, the Lenoir Shell Homestead Loop Trail is completed. Under Lisa's guidance, much progress has been made on the Birchfield Trail and Overmountain Victory Trail relocation this year as well. Specific tasks planned: -build the foot bridge if logs are available by the 30th -install the Shell Loop Trail sign and do more marking of the Shell Hollow Trail down low (turn arrows needed) -re-install the downed post in the field going up the Birchfield Trail -put up triangle blazes along the lower portion of the OVNHT (through the pastures) -install a "End of Birchfield Trail" sign and a OVNHT sign with arrow at the end of the Birchfield Trail Volunteers are welcome to camp at the high cabin if they want to that weekend (first six who reply that they have an interest in camping). There is running, clean spring water at the site. Three bedrooms with beds, one gigantic couch, propane grills, fire ring, fall migrant birds passing through, and a beautiful vista. Meeting time is 9 a.m. in the parking area at Hampton Creek Cove until folks need to leave or 3 p.m., whichever comes first. Bring your own food (lunch and snacks) and water. It will be a beautiful time of year to work in the outdoors!! So let us know if you'd like to participate. Contact Judy Murray at Roanwoman@xxxxxxx until Sept. 10, and after that Nora Schubert at nschube@xxxxxxxxx To learn more about Public Lands Day, read below. Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Join us on National Public Lands Day! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In this issue... -- How can National Public Lands Day benefit you? -- What resources does NPLD provide to site coordinators? -- Here's how to participate in National Public Lands Day Dear Potential National Public Lands Day Site Manager, Join us on September 30, 2006 to participate in the 13th annual National Public Lands Day! One Saturday every September, dedicated as National Public Lands Day (NPLD), provides an opportunity for volunteers to join together across the nation and work towards the common goal of improving our public lands. In 2005, nearly 80,000 volunteers and community partners contributed an estimated $11 million of improvements to 800 public land sites â federal, state, city and county lands â in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Citizens, land managers and local communities who participate in National Public Lands Day build upon the magnificent and lasting legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps to improve publicly held lands for greater enjoyment and enrichment of all Americans. NPLD worksites can involve all sorts of activities such as picking up trash, planting trees and flowers, building or repairing trails and bridges, removing invasive plants, collecting native seeds, improving wildlife habitat, restoring shorelines, putting up bird boxes, stabilizing stream banks, painting picnic tables, and many more. We encourage all public land managers, local conservation groups and âfriendsâ organizations including state, county, city, and other local lands to participate in this national event. Public lands such as urban and neighborhood parks, county parks, forest preserves, beaches, community gardens, botanical gardens, environmental educational centers, and local playgrounds are especially encouraged to register. How can National Public Lands Day benefit you? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Builds partnerships between the public sector and the local community based upon mutual interests in enhancing, improving and restoring Americaâs public lands; Improves public lands for outdoor recreation with volunteers assisting land managers in hands-on work; Educates Americans about critical environmental and natural resources issues and the need for shared stewardship of these valued, irreplaceable lands. www.publiclandsday.org ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST Bristol Birds Net Photo Gallery located at: http://photos.yahoo.com/ph/jwcoffeyy/album?.dir=/efd5 Be sure and visit the Bristol Bird Club website at: http://bristolbirdclub.org This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. -------------------------------------------------- You are subscribed to Bristol-Birds.
