Yesterday (Tuesday, Feb. 16) Gil Derouen and I birded some spots in Sullivan County. Some highlights follow: Paddle Creek: Mallard 4 Gadwall 4 Wigeon 2 Redhead 4 Ring-necked Duck 1 Weir Dam and Osceola Island Bufflehead 26 Lesser Scaup 4 Kingfisher 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Winter Wren 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 Golden-crowned Kinglet 3 Yellow-rumped Warbler 6 White-throated Sparrow 8 Musick's Campground Canada Goose 1 Pied-billed Grebe 3 Lots of birds around the feeders including Towhees, Chipping Sparrows and White-crowned Sparrow Strong, cold wind out by the lake Middlebrook Lake (all numbers are rough estimates--snow was flying, making it hard to count birds that were across the lake, and the gulls were steadily flying to and from the lake.) Canada Goose 26 Mallard 30 Black Duck 2 Coot 20 Ring-billed Gull ~800 Herring Gull 2 Birding turned out better than expected, considering the weather. Most of the birds at Osceola Island were in the brush and trees along the path that splits off to the left at the first foot bridge by the restrooms. Roy Knispel Washington County, TN
