22 May 2006
Washington County, TN
Western Region of County (Limestone, Telford, Bowmantown, etc?)

I spent today (05/22) birding western Washington County. The highlight of
the day was a HENSLOW'S SPARROW. The disappointment of the day came in the
late afternoon.

The sparrow was located at the end of Bud Lane, a dead-end, graveled road
located immediately west of Westview Elementary School (Powell Farms/Pond
area), just off of Old State Route 34 (Highway 353). The left fork of Bud
Lane continues around to a couple of barns. The sparrow was located on the
hilltop behind the east barn (in the field behind Westview School). It
played hide-and-seek the majority of the time, but did pose and sing on
several occasions (just not much to perch on in the field). Rick Knight
and Don Holt were also able to get the bird early this afternoon. The late
afternoon disappointment came when I returned there with Rob Biller, Rack
Cross, and Don Holt. THE SPARROW FIELD WAS BEING MOWED! Needless to say,
we had no luck. The road was actually blocked with machinery and trucks.

Other notable birds of the day:

Blue-winged Teal (1) - Bush Hog Pond
Green-winged Teal (1) - Bush Hog Pond
Northern Bobwhite (1) - Gravel Hill Road
Lesser Yellowlegs (1) - Westview Pond
Red-headed Woodpecker (1) - Bowmantown
Willow Flycatcher (2-3) - Bud Lane
Loggerhead Shrike (2 in Sulphur Springs - off A.A. Deakins Road, 1 in
Limestone)
Warbling Vireo (3)
Horned Lark (1) - Keebler Road
Savannah Sparrow (1) - Keebler Road, singing
Grasshopper Sparrow (several)
Blue Grosbeak (several)
Dickcissel (5 at Keebler Road, 1 at Gravel Hill Road)
Bobolink (2) - Bud Lane

This afternoon, we also had several peeps at Westview and Bush Hog Ponds.
Don Holt stayed to work on them a bit more, but we did have at least one
Western Sandpiper and three Least Sandpipers. Hopefully Don will post his
final tally later.
