I was at Bays Mountain this morning and saw a few good birds. Most
significant was a probable Connecticut Warbler. It was on the woodland floor
above the
upper parking lot. As I was entering my car and about to leave, I heard
"beecher, beecher, beecher, beecher, beecher." I got out of my car and waited
for
a repeat for direction to the bird. In less than a minute, it repeated the
"beecher" five times again. Both Ovenbird and Carolina Wren had been calling
earlier and were quite different. I moved up hill and it called a third time.
This time I was able to get the direction of the call. As I carefully
approached, a relatively large warbler-like bird flew off the ground and
disappeared
deeper into the woodland. I did not hear or see it again. Also present this
morning in the vicinity of the main building were Blackburnian Warbler,
Black-throated Green Warbler, Blackpoll, Bay-breasted Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo,
Scarlet Tanager, and on the other side of the dam I saw and heard Ovenbird,
Wood
Duck, Hairy Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager and lots of Red-eyed Vireos. The usual
Turkeys were sentries at the main gate! John Moyle Glen Alpine Road
