Dr. Fred Alsop's Ornithology Class took an exciting field trip Feb 25-28 to Reelfoot Lake and National Wildlife Refuge in the northwest corner of Tennessee in Lake and Obion counties near Tiptonville. The weather was clear with little wind and temperatures between 30-48*. The full moon enhanced our night "owl prowl". Sightings included a great horned owl nesting in a red tailed hawk's nest. The head and ears were easily seen. Bald eagles were numerous. Several nests were located...one with an eagle on the nest, others with eagles soaring above. On Saturday we received a call from the UT Martin field station representative that 3 trumpeter swans were in a pond in the Phillipy area, so we immediately left the area we were birding and drove 30 min. to see these 3 juvenile birds. A rare sight and definitely a life bird for this reporter!
