The Bristol Bird Club's Austin Springs field trip turned out great. 11 birders found 73 species. We birded at Winged Deer Park (WDP), Austin Springs (AS), Musick's Campground (MC), the Weir Dam (WD), Osceola Island (OI) and South Holston Dam (SHD). Some of the birds found were Blue-winged Teals - AS Buffleheads - WDP, WD Red-breasted Mergansers - MC, SHD Wild Turkey - Hwy 394 Common Loons - MC Double-crested Cormorant - MC Ospreys - AS, MC, SHD Sharp-shinned Hawk - WDP Cooper's Hawk - AS Broad-winged Hawk - AS Lesser Yellowlegs - AS Soltary Sandpipers - AS Wilson's Snipes - AS Bonaparte's Gulls - MC Herring Gull - MC Caspian Terns - MC Hairy Woodpeckers - WDP Yellow-throated Vireo - WDP Purple Martins - AS Cliff Swallows - AS Ruby-crowned Kinglet - OI Brown Thrashers - WDP, AS, MC American Pipits - AS Yellow-rumped Warblers - WDP Yellow-throated Warbler - SHD Pine Warbler - SHD Hooded Warbler - WDP Vesper Sparrow - AS Savannah Sparrows - AS White-crowned Sparrow - MC Rusty Blackbirds - AS Some non-bird highlights included the spectacular beds of Virginia Blubells at WDP and Rick Knight holding up a huge Snapping Turtle for all to see at AS. Rick's bird identification skills were remarkable.
