Hi,
One more question. Was the 18 cell dropped or banged against
anything? The reason I ask is because when I called Humanware to
ask about the x, they asked that question.

I used an 18 cell until I had to send it off for servicing for
the
display problem. I now use a 32 cell.

I just had the exact same thing happen to my Apex. On the last 7
cells
on the far right of my display, the letter X appeared in place of
text.
Unfortunately, I think your friend will have to send her unit to
HW for
repairs.
