[BNU] Re: Nemith, reactions please

I have some thoughts and questions about math and notetakers.

First of all, writing out problems vertically might be a problem because you would need to manually position the cursor to put the plus, minus, times symbols where they should be and the numbers placed where they should be and draw a line underneath. The best way to get around this would be to write problems horizontally instead.

Secondly, some of the Nemeth symbols, like dots 456,1456 after a whole number and before a fraction would need to be translated so Alex's idea of using words would probably be the best.

Third, Was UEB or computer braille more accurate when math was translated into print?

Fourth, A person with a qwerty notetaker would need to use Unicode symbols because the qwerty keyboard can't cover all the math symbols. Fortunately, the Apex supports Unicode, but the Sense notetakers don't.

Fifth, I never understood either Algebra or Geometry, so it's a mystery to me how either one could be done on a notetaker, the qwerty keyboard or the Perkins keyboard.

Representing math on a computer is difficult for anyone, sighted or not. That's
why so much math online is inaccessible; many people turn to images or a
special markup language (Latex) to do it. There is currently no standard way to
display math so that spacial characters, such as superscripts or fractions, are
shown correctly, so the Braillenote has no way of doing this either. The best
it can do is use words to show what it means, because no commputer has a native
way to show, say, a fraction. So, while Nemeth translation isn't great, there
is really not much Humanware can do about it. They could offer a translator
into the afore mentioned markup language, but even then, not everyone knows how
to read it or has a translator to show Latex files in plain math code.

Grade 3 is shorthand braille as used in the past by those training for
shorthand and typing courses. Things have moved on considerably since and those
likely to explore grade 3 would be doing it for precisely the same reasons as
expressed here. As with any personal shorthand forms one might choose to use it
must be remembered that these are for personal use and would not be recognised
by most other braille users or notetakers like the bn.

using keymail with gmail, but you'll have to get settings for outlook from

Hey all,
This isn't related directly to the BrailleNote itself, but it is about
it, if that makes any sence.
Anyways, I have installed the BrailleNote PC drivers on my GateWay
NetBook running Windows XP professional, minus the JAWS component
because I use NVDA.
The instalation goes as expected.
I connect the BN to the computer and make sure I have set the Braille
Terminal option to USB. Windows shows the found new hardware dialog. I
tell it to check for compatible drivers online.
It does it's thing for a while, then I get a jalog saying it couldn't find it.
After I unplugged the BN, shut the terminal off, and started it again,
and plugged it into the computer, I get the windows error sound.
Is there something that I have done wrong, or a step I missed.
Please help, and thanks for any help anyone can offer.

No, grade 3 braille is not the same as braille shorthand. Braille
shorthand is a completely different system, designed for verbatim
notetaking. I did not like it, so I learned grade 3 braille, which is
designed for speed writing and the code makes sense.

But I don't use grade 3 anymore because I can write fast enough without
it and because I don't need to save space. I don't emboss anything anymore.

Thanks for correcting and enlightening me at the same time, Terry. I was given
a book for shorthand braille about 25 to 30 years ago now and it was referred
to as grade 3 at the time. It looked quite complicated so I didn't delve too
far into the book. My eldest brother did learn shorthand braille when he
trained as a shorthand typist and explained a little to me about it where some
signs which were the same had different meanings according to the context of
the sentence which again sounded quite demanding to me which confirmed my
decision not to try to learn it was a good one. Now that I have learned grade 3
is different I shall follow the link Alex kindly provided us with as hopefully
this will be more accessible than the shorthand.

Hi there, here's the meanings. foro means you said something,
forow means that the person you're talking too said something.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

First, congrats on the new Apex!!

Second, no, I don't think you can change it. In the time I've
used keychat, I've always seen forow and I don't think it can be
changed.

Hi,

So I just got the new Apex. Feels odd using a display again. I
have some questions though
In keychat, the sign looks like this: forow
is there a way to change it?
Also, through are two chords that I do not know what they are.

O is a usb chord with a sort of box shaped on the other end, and
the other is a chord in a bag.

I do know that there isn't a way to change the forow and foro things. I'm not
sure what the usb thing is. Try plugging it up to the BN and see what happens.
And the chord in the bag is probbably for plugging the BN up to the computer.

How can that work the the BN as a display?

which I recommended, but am not sure how well it works on the Apex. It works on
the braille plus 18 though.
