Hi, Rita. I think I see one part of the problem here. Has anyone taught you about the quick navigation keys in Jaws? These keys help users move quickly through parts of web pages to get to what we want to read without reading the whole page. For example, when you load a lweb page and there are a lot of links at the top, pressing the "n" key will take you past them to the next element. Sometimes that will be an area of text, or it might be a search box. If you press your Jaws keys and the F7 key, you'll get a list of all of the links on a page. In that list, you can hit the first letter of the link you want till you find it, and then press enter to activate that link. If you want the browse link you could hit Jaws key and F7 to bring up the list of links. Then hit the letter "b" until you hear it say browse. Then press enter.

There are two more quick navigation keys I use a lot. There are actually around fifty of these keys, but these two really help a lot. You can press the "f" key on a web page to take you to the next form field. The search box at the top of the Bookshare pages is a form field. So when you load a Bookshare page, press the letter "f" and you'll go right to the search box. This key will save you lots of time on Bookshare.

The last key I'll tell you about here isn't something they use much on Bookshare. It's used heavily on other sites though. Many web pages are divided up with section headings. Pressing the letter "h" will take you to the next heading. It's an easy way to navigate a page with several sections on it.

I could tell you more, and yet I don't want to overload you or anyone else reading this. I hope I've sparked your curiosity a bit. The Jaws help system has a whole section on working with reading web pages. You'll find some really cool things in there. (smile)

I don't like it. However, if I don't have to go all the way down the page to get to search I'll deal with it. I hate reading all that volun teer stuff if that is not what I am looking forat the moment.

Actually, I like getting sent to the Volunteer Home page when I log in and I hope they don't change it. It seems that I can do a search for a title just as easily from there as from anywhere else.

It seems to me I get sent to the Volunteer Home page,
too, and I think it's deliberate. That's where you can
check the Books in Process list and get to the Wish
list sites. On my screen the other things, like
download and upload and Browse books are on the
right-hand margin. I don't know where they can be
found for the nonsighted.

Hmmm, I just logged in a moment ago and got sent to
the Volunteer Home page.
I wonder what's going on.

change

  Hello all
I signed up to be a bookshare volunteer a few
months ago. I was bounced
to the volunteer page any time I loged in after
that. I found this
extremely annoying.
I am so glad that has been changed. It is
wonderful not to end up on the
volunteer page every time I log in when all I want
to do is see if we have
a book title or download a book.
Thanks lots for fixing that problem .
  Rita
