I haven't considered Apple products because I would have difficulty
remembering all of the gestures required to use touch screens. My short term
memory is not what it used to be. I even have doubts about being able to
learn a new device at this point. But at least, I have a first generation
stream so some of it is familiar. I wanted a device with keys that are easy
to feel, that would download books from NLS and Bookshare should my computer
go down, that would give me decent reception on the few radio stations in
which I'm interested, and that would download certain podcasts. The person
from whom I'm buying the stream, is providing me with a grade 2 braille
manual. I do much better learning from instructions that I can look at,
rather than sound. And, it was being sold at a discount this month.

Sorry to change the subject but...
I have not followed tis entire discussion thread so I do not know your
specific needs but have you looked at Apple's iPod Touch (fits in your
pocket) or the iPad (many sizes are available). The cost will vary
depending on the storage capacity but I would not choose any thing less than
32 GB, more is better. You can go to your local Apple store for a hands-on
"test drive" to see if it will accommodate your needs. The people at Apple
are very helpful and there is a 24-hour helpdesk available by phone
(AppleCare). I have an iPod and iPad and I cannot ..imagine anything they
cannot do. I use my devices for radio, Bookshare, BARD, email, music from
my music collection, and podcasts,. There is an app for everything I want.
You do need wireless access to download books directly,and to listen to
radio on-line, and for general operating functions. I use the iTunes
program on my computer to manage my devices. I find it easier to make
changes this way but I still download books from Bookshare and BARD
directly using my Apple devices with we-fi. My gadgets are never far from
my hand. I have considered getting an iPhone but I don't need one for the
cost involved. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch will all do basically the
same things except you need an iPhone if you want to make telephone calls on
one.
Another choice would be an Android tablet which will do a lot of the same
things but not all. It will be cheaper but does not have the good technical
support that Apple provides with its products. It may also be more
vulnerable to viruses and hacking attacks depending on how it is used.
Apple takes care of things like system updates automatically. When I have
had troubles I call AppleCare and they help resolve my problems that are
mostly my fault.
Everyone has different needs and preferences. Also I have a recent partial
vision impairment so I am not familiar with the different needs and services
out there. I hope my opinion is useful to someone. Apple and Bookshare
came to my aid when I really needed something besides television. I use the
Voice Dream Reader app to read my email and Daisy or ePub books. Its great!

I've been reading about that because someone kindly sent me a link to the
hml version of the manual. It does sound like it will be very slow doing it
that way. I want to learn to do it in case I need to, but it wouldn't be my
first choice for downloading books. One of my main reasons is that the radio
reception is terrible in most areas in my apartment. There are a very few
stations I'd like to be able to hear when I'm in my kitchen or living room,
and there are also podcasts that I've found through links in email digests I
receive. I think it would be nice to get some of those and not have to sit
at the computer all of the time. But the learning will be slow and
difficult for me and also, there are so many books that I want to read so I
suspect I won't get it all done. Actually, it would be nice if Humanware
added a feature that allows you to talk to the stream, rather than having to
use the keys to text everything. People can do that with I phones.

You can do a search on either BARD or Bookshare. You use the keyboard as you
would on a telephone. 2 for abc, etc.

That's good to hear. Can I search for a specific title? That's how I usually
ue Bookshare, for books that I've just heard or read about that are new that
aren't on BARD or that I don't want to get from BARD because I don't like
the narration.

I'm about to get a second geneeration stream. I'm doing this with much
trepidation, given my difficulty with learning new technology. However, one
of my reasons is that should my computer go down as it did in 2013, I'd like
to be able to download books directly. I've been very happpy using the daisy
audio format, downloading with my computer. I'm wondering if I need to do
something with Bookshare akin to what one does with NLS with a new device,
getting a key or registering it in some way in order to download directly
from Bookshare.
