There is this really impressive version of Dec Talk singing a portion of Bohemian Rhapsody that came with my K1000. I wish that whoever created it had finished it. But what they did, about a third of it, was incredible.

I sort of wish I knew something about the really geeky side of DecTalk. I love the things that people have done where they make it sing and whatnot...I'm a nerd LOL. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Duane Iverson" <diverson@xxxxxxxxxx>

I use elliquence almost exclusively now since my dectalk PC card is no longer usable. But I still miss Dectalk.
Of course I miss DOS too.

I still use Eloquence and find that generally I prefer it to the Sappy voices (spelling is wrong, sorry), because by being less human, it allows for more imagination. I wonder, does that make any sense? Let's just say, I read and write a lot with Jaws, obviously, and I'm so used to Eloquence that when it reads the words of friends in e-mails or the voices of characters in books or even of my own characters, the sound of the actual computer voice is nicely eclipsed by the way the particular voice sounds either in reality or in my mind. With the newer ones, they have a sort of fascination for me because they sound almost eerily human sometimes, but neither do they have much inflection, so it's harder for me to "hear" in my imagination. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. Or even the old eloquence stuff from previous versions of JAWS.

Hahaha, that would be weird! I love the voices, though...well, most of them. I recently got into a little bit of interactive fiction playing, and they sure beat MS Sam! ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. J. Nolte" <a.j.nolte@xxxxxxxxx>

Yeah, UI took German, but I'm running the Sappy voices with JAWS 8.0, and using Karren (the Australian). Love the voice, but German with an Australian accent...well, it really doesn't bear thinking about. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elfqueen" <elfqueen@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hahahaha you should! *grins* That would be interesting...though you might have to be accessively bored to think of all of them...Haha!

Oh, of course, it would be in another language...too bad I took Spanish instead of German. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. J. Nolte" <a.j.nolte@xxxxxxxxx>

Sometime when I'm eccessively bored I'll have to write up the "tenets of blindism" and post them here. <g>

Incidentally, the only wiki article on blindisms iis in German, which is unhelpful in answering the "where'd it come from" question. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elfqueen" <elfqueen@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

LOL! Blindism, the new political belief system!

I guess that just proves that -ism is used in a lot of various ways and can't really be taken to mean one thing in particular. I do wonder, though, about the origin of the term "blindism" and who really coined it, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. J. Nolte" <a.j.nolte@xxxxxxxxx>

Funny: when i think "ism" I usually think of a political ideology like "Communism" "Fascism" etc. I could imagine mentioning the word blindism in a poli-sci class and confusing the heck out of everyone... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elfqueen" <elfqueen@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Ah, I see. Yeah...okay, that really did go right by me the first time, sorry! *smile*

Actually, though, the -ism suffix doesn't always refer to discrimination. This is no nearer to what blindisms are, really, but there is "autism," which is organic/neurological (yes, I know there's increasing argument about this, I'm not trying to start anything *smile*), and "giantism," which is physical. "Blindism" is behavioral, but my guess is that it came about as a sort of slang. I could be wrong; I haven't researched it or anything.

This has turned out to be quite an interesting discussion, the kind of thing I don't get to participate in often just because no one is usually interested enough to pursue such things and be so analytical.

Nicole,

I am not disputing your definition of blindisms at all.

I just think the use of the ism is interesting, because in every other instance of use of the word, it refers to discrimination. In blindness, it refers to bad habits.
