Dont confuse battery types ehre. AA, AAA, etc refer to the battery's physical size and shape. There are many kinds, some which cannot be recharged. Alkalines cannot be recharged and if you attempt to do so, you will blow them up or burn out the charger.. There is however, an alkaline that can be recharged. But you must be careful to use the correct charger for the type you have.

NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) is a good choice as many devices can use AA batteries. For devices that get little use, alkalines are better as those will not lose a charge over time as will the rechargeables.
