Lynda:

This is one of the most stable pieces of software that we sell.
Therefore, it's not likely that it's the software that's causing the
problem. You can certainly check to be sure you are running the latest
software version, which should be 2.3.1. You can check that by going
into the Book Port Transfer program, and either do alt a for the about
box, or tab down to the "About" button and read that box. You don't
have to have the Book Port connected for that part, although if the Book
Port is connected, it'll give you both the Software and the Firmware
versions. The Firmware Version should be 2.3. As far as knowing why
it's doing this, I'd have to know if you've ever had to reformat to make
it work, or if it starts working without reformatting the card.
Usually, when the Book Port stops working, it is card related. If it's
not card related, then it could be a bad cable, or interference from
another USB device or something on the computer that's causing it. In
doing support for this product in the 3 years it's been out, I can tell
you it's almost never software related. In short, if you were to
reinstall the software, it's likely the problem would persist, because
it's being caused by something else. And, as I'm writing this, it also
occurs to me that if your cable is one of the longer cables, then this
problem could also occur. The longer the cable, the longer the path.
When we first came out with the Book Port, the cables were a lot
shorter. Somewhere in the course of time, the manufacturer started
using cables that were longer in length and we started seeing the
intermittent connections. So, if you can rule out all of the other
things I mentioned, it could be as simple as the length of the cable.
If you have a PacMate or something else that uses the same type of
cable, you might try using that one and see if it still happens. If
not, then you might want to go out and see if you can purchase a shorter
cable.

I'm sorry I can't answer the question any better than that, but that's
the best guess I can make, based on the information I have and the
question.

Why is it that sometimes our computer doesn't recognize the book port
when connected, and sometimes it will. Should we check for updates?
Should I uninstall and reinstall the software?
