If it showed up after rebooting... jump up and down and shout for joy! (Smile!) You are fortunate it showed up at all! Remember. Computers are quirky beasts. They have minds of their own. I do think they are alive... just waiting to...

Ok, I was attempting to streighten out a Book Port for one of our clients yesterday, and encountered the following.

1. Attached Book Port with firmware 2.1.
2. Transfer decided it needed to update the transfer software.
3. Transfer software update to latest version.
4. New transfer software checks for firmware and says there is a new firmware upgrade. 5. Firmware downloaded, but when the Book Port was unpluged the Book Port aborted the installation of the upgrade because the battery level was at 42 percent and the unit insisted it wanted new batteries.

6. Installed new batteries and the upgrade completed.
7. When I pluged the Book Port back into the computer the computer made the tone that there had been something pluged into a USB port, but the transfer software never responded, and indicated that the Book Port was not connected. 8. The only way to get the transfer software to see the Book Port to recognize the Book Port again was with a complete shutdon/reboot of the computer.

: This is one of the most stable pieces of software that we sell.
: Therefore, it's not likely that it's the software that's causing the
: problem. You can certainly check to be sure you are running the latest
: software version, which should be 2.3.1. You can check that by going
: into the Book Port Transfer program, and either do alt a for the about
: box, or tab down to the "About" button and read that box. You don't
: have to have the Book Port connected for that part, although if the Book
: Port is connected, it'll give you both the Software and the Firmware
: versions. The Firmware Version should be 2.3. As far as knowing why
: it's doing this, I'd have to know if you've ever had to reformat to make
: it work, or if it starts working without reformatting the card.
: Usually, when the Book Port stops working, it is card related. If it's
: not card related, then it could be a bad cable, or interference from
: another USB device or something on the computer that's causing it. In
: doing support for this product in the 3 years it's been out, I can tell
: you it's almost never software related. In short, if you were to
: reinstall the software, it's likely the problem would persist, because
: it's being caused by something else. And, as I'm writing this, it also
: occurs to me that if your cable is one of the longer cables, then this
: problem could also occur. The longer the cable, the longer the path.
: When we first came out with the Book Port, the cables were a lot
: shorter. Somewhere in the course of time, the manufacturer started
: using cables that were longer in length and we started seeing the
: intermittent connections. So, if you can rule out all of the other
: things I mentioned, it could be as simple as the length of the cable.
: If you have a PacMate or something else that uses the same type of
: cable, you might try using that one and see if it still happens. If
: not, then you might want to go out and see if you can purchase a shorter
: cable.
:
: I'm sorry I can't answer the question any better than that, but that's
: the best guess I can make, based on the information I have and the
: question.
