Subject: Tell Congress to Hold Those that Damage Refuges Responsible
#yiv7969779331
Dear James,It’s Take Action Tuesday! Today we need your help to pass the Fish
and Wildlife Resource Protection Act (H.R. 4558)!The Resource Protection Act
would allow the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to collect compensation from
parties who knowingly destroy resources on Service property, including national
wildlife refuges, so the burden to restore damaged resources falls on the
responsible party, not taxpayers. Other federal agencies, like the National
Park Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
already have similar programs in place. Those who knowingly destroy refuge
resources are often held unaccountable - and the American taxpayer is forced to
pay for the damages they have caused. When armed militants took over the
Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, Oregon, in early 2016 they racked up
a $6 million dollar bill in damages and associated expenditures. If the
Resource Protection Act was already enacted, the criminal militants would foot
the bill for this destruction, not the taxpayers. As Congressional leaders
consider holding hearings on the Resource Protection Act, now is the time to
let your lawmakers know that it is simply wrong for taxpayers to pay for
others’ acts of vandalism and destruction. Please urge Congress to take up and
pass the Fish and Wildlife Resource Protection Act to hold those who destroy
Refuge System property financially responsible, not the American taxpayerClick
here to Take Action and we'll see you next Tuesday! Sincerely, Desiree
Sorenson-Groves, Vice President of Government Affairs
