Hey Jon!
Finding a chimney starter was the greatest thing that happened to my grilling
experience. I've had one for 3 years or so and it has made so much difference.
This hardwood charcoal didn't really flame, it just crackled and shot pieces
into the air. Really sparky and kind of dangerous. Could have been a bad
batch. The charbroil grill Ihve now specifically tells me not to use hardwood
in it so guess I' s are for now :)

Hardwood charcoal is pretty much all I use, and I have never had the
fireplace-like fire you described. That may be because I use a chimney
starter to measure and light the coals I need. Yes, it does burn hotter than
standard brikettes, but that is fine by me. I'd rather have more heat than
not. Learning to control the heat and flames is part of the grilling
experience, and the more I use it, the easier it becomes. I light the coals
from underneath the starter using oiled paper, dump them out into the grill
after 15 minutes or so, then let them burn down until they're covered with a
white ash and are plenty hot, but the flames, if any, have died down. Flare
ups aren't much of a problem for me, but it depends on what I'm cooking.
