I wanted to add a quick comment about my last message regarding selecting text
on a Web page in Safari.
I have confirmed that doing this is possible, to an extent, but the process is
extremely clunky compared to how it's done using Windows.
Selecting all text on a Web page is similar to how it's done in Windows and is
identical to how you do it on a Mac. In Safari, I can press command-A to select
all text and command-C to copy the selected text to the clipboard. Unlike
Windows screen readers, VoiceOver does not confirm the action by saying
something helpful like "copied selected text to clipboard" or "copied" or even
"horray." It's just copied. I went into Pages, Apple's word processor, and was
able to paste the copied text by using command-V. On an Apple keyboard, the
command key is where the alt key is located on a Windows keyboard and Apple
uses this command key to replace the control key in Windows, which is a bit odd
considering that Apple keyboards do have a control key. Hey, I just report the
weather ... I don't make it rain.
This is helpful but I can find no way of selecting portions of text on a Web
page, at least using VoiceOver, if I wanted to paste just an article without
links at the top or bottom of the page, which is unbelievable. f course, for
most articles and press releases I can press shift-command-R to activate the
very handy reader mode, which presents the text of a page, stripping out most
of the extraneous links. Still, I find it not very efficient to copy and paste
Web pages from Safari into Mail, something I do regularly in Windows using
Firefox and either Outlook or Thunderbird. Even more annoying, the iPhone
doesn't use command-tab, similar to the Windows alt-tab, to switch between
programs. I believe this capability exists on the iPad but Apple never put it
on the iPhone. Suffice it to say that I am quite looking forward to having my
Windows machine back in service.
