Hi,
It is my understanding that it merely replaces the earlier version. You
shouldn't need to uninstall prior version before updating unless you run
into a specific problem. sometimes when troubleshooting people will do a
clean uninstall and reinstall but generally speaking the program will just
update over itself without you needing to intervene.
I hope that helps.
And no question is embarrassing. What did all of our parents and teachers of

the good variety used to say the only stupid question is the one not asked

Okay, here's another embarrassing question, but it's something I've
been wondering about for quite some time. When a new NVDA release
comes out, is it an add-on to what I already have or does it
completely subsume previous releases? Depending on the answer to that
question, should I be uninstalling my previous version so that I'm not
using so much desktop memory?

The first release candidate for NVDA 2015.4 is now out, including more

early as next week, right before Thanksgiving.
