Jan,
Most programs, will write over their previous version.
If you update c-cleaner, you get only 1 desktop icon for c-cleaner.
Jaws doesn't do that as for remote access you must be in similar versions.
NVDA must have the exchange of old and new components as I've never seen more
than one desktop icon, nor more than one in a programs list in any program
cleaning or reverse install listings.
So I think it's rather auto, and would say it is for NVDA. Maybe in the case of
a Beta version they would be smart to leave the old version in case the Beta
has problems.

Not concrete I know but trying to account for all situations.

Okay, here's another embarrassing question, but it's something I've been
wondering about for quite some time. When a new NVDA release comes out, is it
an add-on to what I already have or does it completely subsume previous
releases? Depending on the answer to that question, should I be uninstalling
my previous version so that I'm not using so much desktop memory?
