Hello all,

White is facing a very difficult ending unless something drastic occurs. The
queenside pawn structure as it stands, can not create a passed pawn. Even if
black were to trade queens, un-doubling white's b-pawns, giving white a mobile
3 against 2 majority, any rook ending or pawn ending seems to be winning for
black.

The only tactical tool already in the position, is the white queen pinning the
black queen to her king. Pinned pieces have their mobility severely restricted,
and in some instances are paralysed. Here the black queen can move, providing
it stays on the a2-g8 diagonal.

The black queen is protected by the rook on d8, however the reversal, of the
rook being protected by the queen is not true, remember, the black queen is
limited to movement between the c4 and f7 squares. So, while the black d8 rook
is shielded from attack, it is unprotected, offering white a winning plan.

White plays, 1. Rd1, attacking the black queen, and also placing an x-ray
attack on the black d8 rook. Black has 2 options.

Option A: Black tries, 1. ... Qxc4, and white refrains from the "automatic"
recapture of the black queen, but instead plays, 2. Rxd8+. This is an
in-between move, known as a zwichenzug, which captures the black rook with
check. The black king must move, 2. ... Kf7, and only now does white choose to
capture the black queen with, 3. bxc4. White is a rook ahead for a pawn, and
winning.

Option B: Black retreats with, 1. ... Qf7, keeping the queen protected, but
leaving the black d8 rook unprotected. White simply plays, 2. Rxd8+, winning a
rook. Note, white can also trade queens first with, 2. Qxf7+, and win the rook
a move later with, 3. Rxd8.

There are 2 important features which allows this tactic to work. Firstly, the
black rook and king are on the same rank, which means when the black rook is
captured, it happens with check. Secondly, the distance between the black king
and rook is 2 files, which means when the black king moves out of check, it
will be too far from the rook to give protection.

Paul Benson.
